Dental Exam

Young man smiling while leaning against a wallA dental exam involves inspection of the mouth, teeth, and gums. It is an excellent preventative measure that ensures your teeth are in good health. At GOREgeous Smiles, our dentist ensures to take the necessary X-rays to determine if any dental problems need to be addressed while they are still minor. We also provide you with the necessary treatment to stop tooth infections from spreading to the gums.

Are Dental Exams for Adults and Kids the Same?

The adult and child oral examinations are both important, but they greatly differ. In most cases, an adult dental examination is perceived to be caused by an unpleasant experience. But this is usually not the case. Adults may go for a dental exam to ensure their gums and teeth are healthy, when they want to get braces, or when they want to know if a dental issue is developing. You do not have to wait for a dental problem to develop to go to the dentist.

On the other hand, kids' dental exams are recommended to check if their teeth are developing properly. It is also to determine if there are any signs of tooth decay. Whether your child has primary or permanent teeth, it is crucial to bring them in for an oral examination to prevent gum disease, cavities, and decay. Parents can easily take baby teeth for granted, but they are essential for the proper development of permanent teeth. This is why frequent dental examinations for kids is a must.

How Long Will My Dental Exam Take?

Unlike kids' dental exams, which tend to be shorter, adult dental appointments may take 45 to 60 minutes. This is because there are things that will be combined with your oral exam. The dentist may clean your teeth, or screen for oral cancer, gum disease, and tooth cavities. We will also want to discuss oral hygiene practices and how you should ensure your teeth are clean and free from germs. Apart from that, we will discuss any underlying health issues affecting your dental health.

Types of Dental Exams

There are usually two types of dental exams dentists use: comprehensive exams and regular dental exams. The comprehensive dental exam is mostly repeated after many years since your last checkup. It may consist of oral cancer screening, X-rays, TMJ exam, gum disease screening, and a thorough teeth assessment. The main aim of performing this exam is for the dentist to understand your dental formula and mouth.

On the other hand, regular dental exams involve evaluating your dental health on a routine basis. On your first visit, your dentist will examine your teeth. We will then assess if any dental problems have occurred since your last visit. If everything is fine, you will have a regular cleaning. If there are any specific issues that have developed, we will address those during your visit.
